Forgotten Lunch Money is a Thing of the Past

How do you know what your children are really spending their lunch money on? How many times has your child forget their PIN code or left their lunch card at home so they can’t purchase any lunch at school? Biometric technology has made its way into our school cafeterias. Finger scans are now being used to access personal accounts set up by parents. Food Service Solutions has developed a biometric system with point-of-sale readers in school cafeterias. The fingerprints are not stored as an image but as mathematical information only. [end] 

The Fort Crawford Elementary School, located in the Pittsburgh area, has implemented a pilot program allowing its students to utilize biometrics to pay for their lunch instead of money or an access code, according to a Pittsburgh Trib Total Media article. The new system, developed by School-Link Technologies, enables children to scan a finger that is connected to their lunch account when at the register in their cafeteria and have their lunch account debited accordingly.
