U.S. examining biometric export rules to China

The U.S. Commerce Department is working on new rules telling U.S. companies what security technologies, specifically biometrics, can be exported to China, according to a report in the New York Times.

Facial recognition technology is being singled out, the report states. There are concerns the technology could be used to identify political and religious dissidents. Current policy allows the export of surveillance equipment as long as it; not intended exclusively for police work.


With the Olympics around the corner Chinese security agencies are increasing their spending on video systems with computer analysis tools.

The Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council has published a white paper examining how the transit industry can best make use of NFC technology.

“One of the major challenges facing transit agencies today is how to capitalize on the ever-growing popularity of mobile phones with a solid mobile strategy,” said Transportation Council Chairman Craig Roberts. “This white paper builds on the knowledge base developed in earlier white papers to foster a greater understanding of NFC technology, explain its role in the transit industry, and shed light on key issues facing the transit industry in developing a mobile strategy.”

The GSM Association has announced that 45 of the world’s leading mobile operators have committed to supporting and implementing SIM-based NFC services.

Chief among these companies are China Mobile and China Unicom, which account for nearly 800 million subscribers throughout China. SmartMetric announced it has leased a manufacturing plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina where it plans to manufacture fingerprint activated smart cards.
