International visitors at Detroit airport to give 10 fingerprints

Detroit Metropolitan Airport becomes latest airport to require ten fingerprints instead of just two from its international visitors for the Department of Homeland Security. The department said the change in its US-VISIT program is meant to help it do a better job of stopping potential security risks.

In their investigation of a Chinese woman accused of credit card theft, Japanese police discovered that the woman had had her fingerprints surgically altered, according to an Epoch Time article. The woman, named Lin Xiuai, confessed to having a special clinic China perform the surgery to have her fingerprints changed for the equivalent of just under $4,500 due to wanting to enter Japan and having being arrested there in 2001 for suspicion of illegally entering the country. The surgery was successful enough that it enabled her to pass the biometric checkpoints at the airport.

In a pilot program, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has begun taking biometric samples from visitors of the country as they are leaving. The pilot is setup at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport where they are collecting fingerprints from the non-U.S. citizens.

The Gold Coast International Airport in Queensland, Australia has become the seventh Australian airport to be outfitted with the biometric SmartGates developed by biometrics company SAGEM Australasia, according to an IT News article.
