Asia slower to adopt biometrics than expected

While there have been significant initiatives in biometrics introduced throughout Asia, many of the programs have been slow to be adopted, according to a ChinaTechNews article. Navin Rajendra, a consultant for Frost & Sullivan, believes that much of this is due to standards not yet being in place and high cost of execution. As use of biometrics grow within Asia, market analysts feel that eventually the benefits will outweigh the cost.

The other major player in slow biometric adoption is security concerns. Although the worry regarding security of the biometric identifiers seems to be limited to its use in personal banking in Asia, it remains a major concern in Europe and North America.

Lieberman Software Corp. has partnered with Aquion to resell the Lieberman’s identity management and security management products.

Aquion was chosen as a partner to target the Asia Pacific region, most specifically Australia, New Zealand and India. Recently Lieberman has noticed a demand for privileged account password management technology in that region which is why they called upon the Asia-Pacific supplier Aquion to expose and support their products.

Safran SA, a Paris-based developer of defense-related electronics, is in talks to buy the majority of biometrics developer L-1 Identity Solutions, according to a Bloomberg article. Safran is one of multiple bidders to purchase the company, who has seen big jumps in its stock price recently.

RNCOS, a consulting firm, has announced it expects the financial sector to be a potential driver of biometric technology adoption in the global market.

The reposts stated that biometrics will be used to fight fraud the the industry will see a compound annual growth rate of 18% for the global biometrics market through 2012.
