Conference on future of biometrics to take place in Brussels

A conference on Europe’s ability to handle the increase in demand for biometric technologies will be held later this month in Brussels, Belgium, according to a Cordis News article. The conference is to be organized by University of Kent and the United Kingdom Biometrics Institute and will cover the use of biometrics in national security as well as many other public and private uses.

The European Union (EU) group Rising pan-European and International Awareness on Biometrics and Security Ethics (RISE), a group dedicated to creating and monitoring international ethics and policy issues related to biometric technologies, is organizing their third conference on international biometrics. The previous two conferences were held in 2005 and 2006 in Brussels and Washington respectively. The new one, planned for early January 2010, is to take place in Hong Kong to better identify issues specifically pertaining to Asian markets.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a government organization that seeks to drive technology development and implementation through creation of industry standards, has announced the International Biometric Performance Testing Conference they are hosting in Maryland in early March. The conference, which also includes poster sessions, is intending to discuss in detail the latest developments in the testing and certification of biometric systems.

Biometric Signature ID (BSI) announced positive results from a study of their software-only approach to biometric authentication for students using PCs. The new solution utilizes gesture biometrics via a user’s mouse and is envisioned to provide distance-learning students a more effective and secure means of accessing personal student files, discussion groups and other private areas of school networks.

Bright Way College in Jankipuram in India has implemented a system developed by biometrics developer GI Biometric Solutions in hopes of better protecting its students from being sent home with people that are not supposed to be picking up the children, such as kidnappers, according to a Times of India article.
