New Zealand to collect immigrant’s biometric data

New Zealand’s Department of Labour is looking to collect biometric data from immigrants as part of their new immigration information communications technology (ICT) system it is proposing, according to a Computer World article.


They are looking to replace the current ICT system, which is not expected to remain functional after 2011, with one that better assesses risk management in immigration. Additionally, the current system has data spread out over a number of other systems, whereas the new ICT is expected to streamline the data storage into one single area.

If the system is successful they expect it will spread identity management systems across the New Zealand government to be run by the Department of Internal Affairs.

SmartMetric, a developer of portable biometric solutions, has announced that its biometric activated data card can now be used to contain full medical history and health records on the individual. The card, called the SmartMetric Data Card, is a standard sized card that has the capability of holding multiple pages of data as well as being inaccessible without the holder first scanning his fingerprint on the card itself.
