UPEK names new chairman

UPEK, a developer of professional and consumer biometric fingerprint solutions, has named Alan Baratz as their new chairman of the board. Baratz’s professional experience that led him to this role include executive positions at Sun Microsystems, IBM, Versata, Zaplet, NeoPath Networks and Cisco.

While at Sun, Baratz managed the Java platform from its early development stages to its common usage today. UPEK is excited at the possibilities someone with Baratz’s background in technology can bring to their company and assist them in this time of heavy growth in the biometric market. [end] 

UPEK, a developer of biometric solutions, has announced the release of a new version of their Protector Suite 2009 fingerprint sensor software that now supports the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system by incorporating support for its Windows Biometric Framework. In doing so, UPEK has assured that its software suite will now work hand-in-hand with any of the many fingerprint sensors also supported by the framework.

Apricorn, a developer of personal data storage technology, has announced the availability of new larger storage capacity offerings from their Aegis Bio line of biometric hard drives. The original Aegis Bio offerings had a storage ceiling of 250 GB, however the new offerings add on a 320 GB, 500GB and a 640 GB drive to the line of offerings.

AuthenTec, a developer of fingerprint and other biometric solutions, has announced its rejection of a bid by fellow biometrics developer UPEK for a merger, according to an Orlando Sentinel article. Officials from AuthenTec called the unsolicited proposed deal, which would have required the replacement of AuthenTec’s entire board of directors, “a highly dilutive and speculative transaction.”

Sagem Wireless, a developer of mobile devices and related services, announced that through a partnership with biometrics developer UPEK they will be releasing fingerprint identity capabilities to a number of mobile devices including Android-based devices. Sagem and UPEK are hoping the new offering to be integral as use of banking and other sensitive transactions over mobile devices increases.
