New technology could improve iris scanning capabilities

Thursday, September 25, 2008

In an effort to increase ease of use and lower costs for iris biometric systems, an engineer from Rocky Mound Engineering, Shane Barwick, has developed a phase mask that will increase the camera’s field of view and make the system less dependent on eye position when scanning, according to an Optics article. The design is set to be prototyped next year.

The phase mask that is being designed is expected to be able to better capture iris images from angles that normally would be too out of focus to get an acceptable image by lowering the camera’s focus sensitivity. Barwick next plans to find ways to increase output and lower cost of other components of iris recognition systems such as source, lens and signal processing.
