Fast food uses biometrics to impede employee fraud

Problems with buddy punching and misuse of manager keys and codes have lead fast food establishments to implement biometric devices to stop misconduct by employees, according to a QSR Web article. Devices such as fingerprint readers integrated into time clocks and point of sales systems are some of the biometric solutions being employed.


While managers have enjoyed the heightened levels of security and control the new systems give them, employees’ concerns over privacy and costs have slowed the adoption of the new technology. Many have had their fears assuaged by the fact that the systems do not record the fingerprint itself but rather a numerical representation of the fingerprint that has been encoded and is untraceable back to the fingerprint. As prices drop and technology improves more fast food outlets have been installing and using biometric technology to save time and money.

Oracle has released a new version of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service that aims to increase security, operational efficiency and functionality in part by integrating biometrics.

Oracle partnered with DigitalPersonal to add integrated biometrics to the POS package. Users of the software will login using their fingerprint, which will replace the need for PINs or passwords. This feature intends to reduce fraud by eliminating the possibility of unauthorized employees using a manager ID or swipe card to access the POS and approve overrides.
