TSA tests bar code ID technology

Monday, December 1, 2008

The Transportation Security Administration tested a bar code ID technology at Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport, according to a Security Director News report.

The system printed a two-dimensional bar code on passengers’ boarding pass. Stored in the encrypted bar code is an image, such as a fingerprint, and other documentation such as driver license or passport information.

The system used was from Laser Data Command’s PassPro system. The system was tested using law enforcement officers as the test group. Officers were issued letters with PassPro bar codes giving them permission to carry weapons aboard the airlines. Officers presented the letters to airline security officials who scanned the bar code to confirm the officer’s identity.
