Homeland Security to begin testing exit portion of US-VISIT

A short pilot test for the exit portion of the US-VISIT program run by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been announced, according to an Aviation News article. The trial is coming as part of a stipulation set forth by Congress and will begin in April.


The US-VISIT program wants international travelers exiting the country to have biometric information collected by airline personnel at check-in counters and then again at the departure gate by Homeland Security personnel. US-VISIT Program Director Robert Mocny says that the pilot should not run any longer than 45 days as it will be mostly to test the process, as the technologies has already been tested.

Biometrics enable expedited border screening

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Global Entry program is expanding enabling enrolled U.S. citizens to enjoy expedited screening when returning from travel abroad to a number of domestic airports. The program also makes them eligible to participate in similar programs at foreign airports.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded Accenture Federal Services a 13-month, $71 million contract to add biometric modalities and other enhancements to the US-VISIT program. US-VISIT uses digital fingerprints and photographs. A pilot program included in the contract will test facial and iris voluntary identification enrollment and matching.
