Gingrich recommends biometrics for Medicaid

On news of a possible bailout with upwards of $1 billion of federal money for state Medicaid funding, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and founder of the Center for Health Transformation, Newt Gingrich, recommended requiring biometric authentication to replace the current system of card or paper identification.

Gingrich says this would be one step that could ensure that the Medicaid bailout would be worthwhile , according to a McClatchy article.


According to Gingrich, the move to a biometric system for Medicaid would alleviate concerns regarding fraudsters running up medical bills at health care centers and pharmacies. Additionally, the switch would expect to save money in reissuing ID cards that have been lost or stolen.

Aethon announced recently that it’s automated tracking and chain-of-custody system - MedEx - is now operational at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
