Apple touting facial recognition in TV ad

Apple Inc. has released a new television commercial showcasing a new feature of its iPhoto application: facial recognition.

The ad shows the PC character surrounded by stacks of photos and flipping through them to find one. “I’m having a very difficult time finding pictures of my friend,” he says.


The Mac character then asks if he’s going to flip through the photos individually to find them. “What other way is there?” the PC asks.

Mac then talks about how the latest version of iPhoto has Faces, a facial recognition program that enables a user to tag individuals once and then the program will automatically do it in the future. The program is free when purchasing a new Mac and $79 if users want to upgrade from an older version. [end] 

DigitalPersona Inc. released a new version of its DigitalPersona Pro Enterprise software that includes facial recognition as a method for authentication.

Facial recognition can now be combined with fingerprint biometrics, passwords, PINs, proximity cards, smart cards and OATH tokens for a multi-factor authentication solution. Policy creation and enforcement works through a client’s existing Active Directory infrastructure.

Apple has filed a new patent outlining how iPhone users can “gift” iTunes purchases and playlists to other users via NFC or email.

According to Patently Apple, the gifting feature works by the gift giver first authorizing the purchase of his gift on his account associated with the online digital media provider. The user then transmits the gift to the recipient using a close range communication protocol, such as NFC.

FingerTec USA has expanded its line of fingerprint time clock software systems with the Face ID 3, which utilizes facial recognition capability.

Face ID 3 is a contact-free computer timeclock that can be used in business or home environments. The system weighs about four pounds and uses facial recognition plus a network of infrared scanners for a surface texture analysis (STA) algorithm.
