Hitachi and JCB working on payment system via biometrics

Hitachi and JCB Co., two Japan-based technology firms, are developing a technology that would link one’s biometric patterns with their credit card or bank data so that cards or checks would not be necessary for making purchases, according to an Engadget article.

The system they are working on utilizes vascular biometrics by identifying individuals by the unique vein patterns in their fingers via near-infrared light. Hitachi is intending to launch a trial of the technology involving 200 of its won employees to make sure that the system is both safe and effective.

BIO-key International announced the results of tests performed on its biometric software and matching algorithm at a hospital over the past three months.

The results, which included 251,447 attempts to use biometrics for login to the testing system, ranked between 99.34% and 100% accuracy with zero false matches. This is a near 100% true accept rate and one staff member that logged in 5,999 in November without a single rejection.
