Biometrics could contribute to a Windows 7 failure

With the Windows 7 Operating System release set for later October this year, many have begun to look closely at the product to see where worries may lie for those making the switch. One such area is with those utilizing single sign-on applications such as biometric or smart card-based authentication, according to a Tech republic blog.

Those utilizing such applications are not stuck, however, as long as they can upgrade their applications to be compliant with the new OS. This is likely not going to be a big issue for most consumer level purchases of Windows 7, however, could potentially spell trouble for any number of businesses dependent on single sign-on applications that are interested in upgrading to the new Windows.

Luxand announced release of a free, downloadable version of its Blink! facial recognition software. The software provides as a biometric-based login service Windows 7 and Windows Vista operating systems via a user’s regular webcam. In addition to authenticating the individual accessing the computer, Blink! also takes and records a still image of each person trying to access the computer to help prevent unauthorized access, and touts the ability to correctly recognize stored faces despite poor lighting conditions or basic changes in a user’s look such as glasses or hair cuts.

The USB encryption devices have already received the certificate 1179 for file-based encryption and certificate 1320 for the SPYCOS crypto core, as well as the certificate 1394 for the XTS-AES sector-based encryption devices.

Sweden’s Precise Biometrics announced a new solution for Windows 7 logon. Precise BioMatch Logon enables user access to Windows 7 machines via their fingerprint. It also enables the user to personalize access to different files or applications. BioMatch Logon is part of a suite of fingerprint software solutions for the Windows 7 operating system and works with most fingerprint sensors compatible with the Windows Biometric Framework.

Luxund, a developer of biometric authentication software, has released a new biometric login application that is compatible with Windows Vista and both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, according to a CNET article. The software, called Blink!, was previously only compatible with the Windows 7 32-bit version, but this new version also promises more stability, reliability and security than its predecessor.
