U.S. Government policy expected to drive biometric growth in healthcare

Experts are expecting heavy future growth in biometric technology usage in the healthcare industry due to President Obama’s promise to get all U.S. medical records moved from paper-based to digital within five years, according to a Self Service article. The expectation, should Obama be successful, is that the move to digital records would both require better authentication methods as well as ease the introduction of biometric kiosks to retrieve medical data as both a means of securing and streamlining the retrieval of the data.


The idea of biometric kiosks for patient sign-in is not new, but also not widespread. Those who have already implemented a biometric solution without requiring it for their patients have reported high levels of opt-in from their patients. Additionally, with technologies such as palm-vein or other vascular scanning solutions, physical contact for authentication is not required and hence does not create a situation where disease spreads easier in a healthcare providers’ buildings and offices.

Luxund, a developer of biometric authentication software, has released a new biometric login application that is compatible with Windows Vista and both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, according to a CNET article. The software, called Blink!, was previously only compatible with the Windows 7 32-bit version, but this new version also promises more stability, reliability and security than its predecessor.

About 37 million higher-frequency RFID and RTLS-enabled asset tracking and asset management tags are expected to ship this year but that’s expected to grow to nearly 150 million by 2014.
