UK youth expected to find new ID cards convenient

Under a new pilot program, Manchester, United Kingdom area youth aged 16 years or older who have a valid passport will soon be able to apply for a biometric ID card, according to a Yahoo News article. Those behind the program expect the cards to be received as a useful alternative to carrying around one’s passport for age restricted activities requiring official IDs such as going to clubs or bars.

The biometric information connected to the cards are already held and secured by three separate databases managed by UK Passport Services. While those behind the program have presented claims of easing day-to-day life as well as improving security for the UK, its detractors have claimed that there is not enough purpose or guarantee of enhanced security behind the program to back up the £5 billion cost behind it.
