California hospital implements vascular solution

Thursday, November 19, 2009

The El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Calif. has announced that it has implemented a vascular biometric solution for registering patients, according to a UPI article. The system, which utilizes near-infrared light to scan the vein pattern in a user’s palm to authenticate identity, has been installed as a means of impeding identity and insurance fraud in the hospital.

While the system is a way to protect the hospital from fraud cases, they also purport that it will protect patients from improper use of their identity that could incur medical related debts in their name. In addition to simply authenticating a patient’s identity, however, the system is also capable of bringing up their medical history allowing the medical staff to make more informed decisions when issuing prescriptions, diagnoses and treatments.
