U.S. and Canada team for security initiatives

Sec. Janet Napolitano, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary, and Peter Van Loan, Canada’s Public Safety Minster, have announced that the countries each represents will be working in tandem on certain initiatives aimed at better securing the two nations from terrorism and organized crime, according to a Talk Radio News article. Among the measures planned include increased information sharing including biometric data sharing.


The possibility of sharing biometric information would also include Australia and the United Kingdom and would serve to strengthen immigration programs between the four countries as well as serving as a means of catching and tracking known criminals and terrorists. Both Napolitano and Van Loan are showing a keen interest in leaning on each other to help increase legal travel and trade between the U.S. and Canada.

Passport Canada has announced plans to launch contactless ePassports by 2012, according to cbc.ca.

The new passports will come embedded with an electronic chip bearing information about the traveler, including name, gender, date and place of birth, and even a digital portrait of his or her face.
