UK nursery employing biometrics for access control

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

In an effort to increase security and improve tracking of children, a nursery in Norfolk called Hewett Under-5s in the UK has begun utilizing biometrics, according to an EDP24 article. However, the nursery collects the biometric samples from the parents of the children instead of the children themselves to better access control as well as tracking which children have been dropped off and picked up.

The biometric mode utilized at Hewett Under-5s is fingerprint recognition and was installed by European biometrics supplier Easydentic for £10,000. As the technology is not only new to the nursery, but relatively unheard of around Norfolk as well, Hewett was happy to only hear about reservations regarding the program from a couple of parents with all 59 enrolling. However, not only has it made life easier and given piece of mind to the parents involved at the nursery, but the staff also who report more ease in working without having to worry about who can access the nursery.
