Indian state utilizing biometric cards for ATM access

The Tripura State Cooperative Bank (TSCB), an institution in the North East Indian state of Tripura, has employed a program that enables more than 2,000 workers of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to utilize biometric cards in lieu of standard bank cards to access their accounts via ATMs, according to a New Kerala article. The program enacted in Tripura is similar to other successful programs that have been implemented in the Indian states Mizoram, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh.


Early reports point to success in the program as several hundred transactions using the cards have already been recorded. Officials from the TSCB are excited by the early success citing that the north eat region is a great starting point for such a program where banks are extremely rare making it very hard for residents to utilize any general banking services.

Prisoners at Tihar prisons, located near New Delhi, India, will now be using smart cards instead of paper coupons for their food purchases.

As reported by The Economic Times, the former system of paper food coupons led to misuse and illegal activity within the jail. Some prisoners would use it for currency in order to get banned substances or buy favors from others.
