Tiny biometric module developed

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

OKI Semiconductor, developers of semiconductors and related technology, has developed a low-power fingerprint matching module that is roughly the size of a postage stamp, according to an IQ Online article.

The new module is designed for authentication in a number of uses including portable devices, physical access control scenarios such as integration with locks and garage door openers and logical access control scenarios such as integration with computer workstations and point of sales terminals.

The module is factory designed for use with Authentec’s AES2510 fingerprint sensor, however, it can also be configured for UART or USB communication protocols. Aside from OKI touting the chip as the only single-chip fully-integrated fingerprint authentication system, they are also pointing to the great cost and power-consumption difference between their system and other solutions.
