Biometrics could save food service operations big money

Thursday, April 1, 2010

Biometric point-of-sales (POS) systems and time management systems could save food service operations a lot of money on labor and cash mishandling, according to a QRS Magazine article.

Next to food, labor is the largest cost for such operations and time clocks or registers are frequently mishandled both accidentally and purposely resulting in lost money for the operation.

The reasoning why biometrics could be a perfect solution to these issues is a matter of accountability. With biometric systems such as fingerprint or hand-geometry scanners running a time-punch system, buddy-punching, or having one employee punch in or out for another that is not present, would be eliminated. Additionally, POS biometric systems guarantee which user is operating the register when a discrepancy occurs, thereby alerting management to a need for additional training, a reprimand or addressing of thievery.

Developers of such system estimate the savings an operation sees when imp[lamenting such systems can often be around $2,000 to $2,500 monthly and often reduce payroll costs by 30-40%. Further, they insist that such systems actually can serve to better reward good employees as well as point out poor performing ones by making each employee’s work trackable.
