Australian airport outfitted with SmartGate

Thursday, April 8, 2010

The Gold Coast International Airport in Queensland, Australia has become the seventh Australian airport to be outfitted with the biometric SmartGates developed by biometrics company SAGEM Australasia, according to an IT News article.

The new technology in the airports is designed to automatically authenticate a traveler’s identity via face recognition if they have a new Australian or New Zealand ePassport embedded with their biometric information.

Australia’s Customs and Border Protection says that the SmartGates have been used by more than 900,000 travelers this financial year at the seven airports.

The next airport the Australian government is considering for future roll-outs of SmartGates is at Darwin Airport sometime next year. In addition to use for easing lines for people with biometric passports, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship has also been trialing a potential use for similar technology that would identify individuals biometrically if they do not have the proper documentation to otherwise ascertain their identity.

The SmartGate technology operates in real-time utilizing facial recognition hardware that compares the captured data of a traveler to the data contained on the chip embedded on his e-passport. Australian Customs and Border Protection Service says that implementation of Morpho’s solution has proven to be a successful way for Australian Border Protection agents to cope with growing traveler numbers while improving traveler experience at borders and maintaining the high-levels of security they demand.
