Indian university employs biometrics to track faculty

The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad, India has created a program requiring the professors at their 300 affiliated engineering colleges to check in biometrically when they begin class in an effort to correctly track the numbers of faculty operating at each college, according to a LazyBuzz News article.

The university employed the new measures as it suspects many of the colleges are understaffed and misreporting numbers to avoid action from the university.

The system JNTU is employing had already been utilized in a trial at two of the colleges. Prof D.N. Reddy, vice-chancellor for JNTU, has clarified that the new systems are being employed by the university solely to make sure that the right people are teaching and that they can make sure each college has enough teachers.
