Imation biometric flash drive strong on security weak on performance

Saturday, May 29, 2010

Imation, a developer of removable media and data storage devices, has released a biometric flash drive, the Defender F200. A review from Business Week says it’s a strong option for security among biometric flash drives but falls short on performance.

The Defender touts a number of security features such as 256-bit AES data encryption, a physically tamper-resistant casing, password authentication, and is waiting for Level 3 Federal Information Processing Standardization validation.

The review looks at the drive’s security features as being both very robust in its encryption as well as being very easy to use. Additionally, the reviewer comments on the ability of Imation to foresee issues with fingerprint-based flash drives by including a 6 foot USB cable to allow for easier use of the embedded fingerprint sensor.

Despite its strong security features, the drive is reviewed as being a bit more expensive than some of its competitors, but potentially worth it for the added security. Additionally, the Defender tested as falling short on performance and speed when compared to an older flash drive with FIPS Level 3 validation.
