More push for biometrics to fix password overload

In 2007 internet users averaged 6.5 passwords shared across four different websites with users typing an average of eight passwords daily, according to an Internet Evolution article. As this trend has continued and grown over the years, scientists have continually warned that human brains are not designed for this sort of memorization with many recommending biometrics as the simple fix.


Among those pushing for more biometric adoption to help ease the growing number of passwords required for people to complete their everyday tasks is Cal State professor Paul Foote who sites modern biometric systems’ being nearly impossible to spoof while increasing security, convenience and productivity. While many other experts believe costs associated with implementing biometrics remains a primary concern, the consensus seems to be that once people begin to adopt it, they will not want to go back to password-based methods of authentication.

DigitalPersona announced the release of a new version of its Pro Enterprise software solution, version 5.2.

Among the aspects of the new version DigitalPersona is touting are the extensive number of factors a company utilizing the solution can use to authenticate for access to sensitive information or secured computer stations. These factors include what a user knows, such as PINs or passwords, things you have, such as smart cards, contactless identity cards or Bluetooth devices, and things you are, such as fingerprints.

Information delivery company Colt has licensed Cryptocard’s BlackShield authentication-as-a-service platform to enhance its virtual desktop infrastructure with secure remote access for up to 5,000 employees.

Microsoft’s Windows 8 will include a feature called Live ID that will enable a user to store any password and then sync it across all other trusted Windows 8 machines, according to a report on theverge.com. Since the Live ID is the only password the user will have to remember, other passwords can be set to long, complex, and unique values that would be otherwise difficult to remember.

Precise Biometrics has developed a new line of “smart cases” for brands of tablets and smart phones to be released in 2012 and 2013. The new smart cases have built-in card reader and fingerprint sensor enabling users to both secure their devices as well as replace various password-based security for protected online sites and applications.

ValidSoft partnered with Opus Research and released a report titled “Voice Biometrics Authentication Best Practices: Overcoming Obstacles to Adoption” that predicts the technology will be deployed in payment authentication assuming the best practices it lays out are followed.
