SecuGen awarded biometric patents in Canada and Japan

SecuGen has announced it has been awarded patents for fingerprint-based biometric technology in Japan and Canada. The two patents awarded in Canada are called “Method and Apparatus for Reduction of Trapezoidal Distortion and Improvement of Image Sharpness in an Optical Image Capturing System” and “Optical Fingerprint Image Capturing System” and the Japanese patent is called “High Contrast, Low Distortion Optical Acquisition System for Image Capturing.”

The three new patents raises the number held by SecuGen to 35 in total with most patents still being utilized in the company’s new fingerprint recognition technology. SecuGen CEO Won Lee has promised that while he is pleased with the new patents, the company will be continuing to work on creating new technologies to further the company’s capabilities. [end]

In an effort to streamline passenger security, Jakarta, Indonesia’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport has opened the country’s first biometric immigration gate.

Fingerprint biometric identification provider BIO-key International, Inc. and Oakwell Engineering Limited partnered to create the new gate, designed for use by passengers with electronic passports. Passengers submit their e-passports and authenticate with a fingerprint.

The contract is a significant one for Accurate as it enables them to offer same-day FBI fingerprint submission services for criminal background checks to clients such as housing authorities, Indian reservations and banks.

SecuGen has announced its Hamster IV v2 fingerprint reader, the new generation of its Hamster IV fingerprint readers, has met the requirements Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Single Finger Capture Device Specifications and received FBI certification for FIPS 201/PIV.

GSA adds two SecuGen products to FIPS 201 approved list

SecuGen announced that the General Services Administration added two of its fingerprint scanners to the FIPS 201 Evaluation Program Approved Products list.

The solutions, which are both compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Personal Identity Verification FIPS 201 standard, are the Hamster IV v2 fingerprint reader and ID-USB SC/PIV v2 combined fingerprint and smart card reader.

Google acquires NFC patents from IBM

Google has acquired 188 patents and 29 patents pending from IBM, some of which concern NFC technology, reports ZDNet.

Adding to the 2,053 IBM patents already turned over to Google in the past year, these new patents cover databases, mobile phones, server infrastructure, wireless telephone systems, NFC and other patents that may relate to Google’s Android mobile operating system.
