UIDAI recommend biometric security for sensitive Indian data

Members of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a commission setup by the Indian Government to manage the process of providing the country’s citizens with unique ID numbers that correspond to biometrics, are recommending that biometric systems be put into place to protect the large amounts of sensitive data being collected and stored in the country, according to a Times of India article.

Further, the UIDAI expects that its own unique ID number program will provide the necessary framework to biometrically secure the data. The opinions from the UIDAI, as well as others that urged the Indian government for more widespread applications of biometric technology within the government, came about during a workshop organized by the Confederation of Indian Industries with the American National Standards Institute and Bureau of Indian Standards.

Morpho has helped to issue the first Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) number during the inauguration ceremony for the project.

A UIDAI number, a 12-digit personal identification number, will eventually be assigned to each citizen in India. It will be connected to fingerprint and iris biometrics in an effort to make identification easier across the country especially when dealing with social programs.
