The Desert Sands School District, a California school district outside of San Diego, has approved a fingerprint-based biometric authentication system to improve security and child tracking on the district’s school buses, according to a USA Today article.
The system being used, called Biometric Observation Security System (BOSS) and was developed by Global Biometrics Security, is being used in hopes of keeping students from being getting lost through getting off on the wrong stops and ensure the right students are on the right buses.
Other school districts wherein issues involving children being mistakenly let off at incorrect stops or brought onto wrong bus routes, such as Prince George’s County in Maryland, are also considering similar systems for their buses.
In the BOSS system students are required to scan their fingerprint when leaving the bus so that if they are getting off at the wrong stop an alarm will ring to alert the driver.
