Design review for Lockheed’s NGI system completed

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Lockheed Martin has announced that following a successful Critical Design Review of increment 3 of the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system, which includes latent fingerprint and palm print matching capabilities, the company is also starting to develop and deploy the new capabilities.

The NGI is a way for the FBI to collect the biometrics of criminals and persons of interest and eventually as a way for local and state police forces to access the FBI database of fingerprints as a means of better identifying those in custody as being repeat serious crime offenders or linked to terrorist activities.

The FBI had already announced the operating capability of NGI’s Increment 1, which includes fingerprint matching capability. Increment 2 involves a capability called the Repository for Individuals of Special Concern, which other law enforcement agencies immediate access to the database.

Other groups and companies involved in the creation of the NGI system include Accenture, BAE Systems Information Technology, Global Science & Technology, MorphoTrak and Innovation Management & Technology Services. [end]

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced that it intends to replace its Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), reports the La Junta Tribune Democrat.

The 20-year old system contains almost 2.7 million master fingerprint records and is one of the oldest statewide law enforcement agency systems in the U.S. and can no longer keep up with demand. The system was designed to process 700 fingerprint cards in a 24 hour period, but today 1,000 to 1,500 fingerprint cards are put through the system.
