Fujitsu develops new multi-modal authentication device

Thursday, June 2, 2011

Fujitsu Laboratories has announced it has developed a biometric technology capable of utilizing both palm vein patterns and fingerprint patterns of three fingers simultaneously.

Additionally, the organization is touting that the system is capable of authenticating an individual within two seconds of a scan and can be utilized as a brand new system or by upgrading existent fingerprint systems with palm vein collection hardware.

One of the ways the developers of the new technology are touting as a solution is for situations where one-to-many matching out of a pool of people in the millions is necessary. This technology, which capitalizes on the additional accuracy of multi-modal biometrics, but diminishes the inconvenience that is usually involved with multiple separate scans as this system is capable of pulling in both fingerprint and palm vein in one scan.

The developers also included an upgrade that would diminish the time it takes for a system to scan through the population of users, leading to even more increased convenience as matching time is greatly decreased for large populations. [end]
