Florida city uses biometrics to fix compliance issues

Administrators for the city of Winter Park, Fla. have moved the city’s police department to a biometric system for securing access to records. The move is for compliance with the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division, according to a Computerworld article.

The lack of compliance stems from shared passwords that often comes from sharing work stations with other officers in the department as well as a lack of two-factor authentication.


The solution administrators settled on was incorporating fingerprint authentication into the workstations from biometrics developer DigitalPersona, which has been so successful that the city decided to expand the program to include data protection for the city’s entire workforce of 520 employees.
