A bill that seeks to introduce biometric identity authentication into elections in the Philippines has passed the country’s House of Representatives following a third reading, according to a Manila Bulletin article.
The bill sees the Filipino Commission on Elections (Comelec) taking the lead on implementation as well as managing the centralized and interactive voter registration list that includes the deactivation of registered voters who do not re-register in time for the 2013 elections.
The data that will be collected from voters in the country include a photograph, fingerprint and signature. Authors of the bill expect the new measures will help ensure honest, clean and credible elections by removing the possibility of voter fraud or other methods of cheating during elections.
