New report predicts high growth in mobile biometric security

Thursday, September 15, 2011

A report released by Goode Intelligence, an information security industry research and analyst company, predicts the mobile phone biometric security products and services marketplace will grow from the 4 million users in 2011 to 39 million users by 2015.

The report, Mobile Phone Biometric Security Analysis and Forecasts 2011-2015, also looks at how it sees a future of mobile phones that could mimic the Japanese model where the phone and its near field communication (NFC) enabled technology are depended on regularly for actions such as making in-person payments.

The growth of mobile biometric security and NFC go hand-in-hand as many of the Japanese phones utilizing NFC for payments also require fingerprint or other biometric scans to authorize transactions.

Among the drivers over the next five-years include a rise in device and individual application security, a growth in mobile commerce, an expected growth in NFC usage, user acceptance of biometrics as a replacement for passwords and PINs, an increase need for multi-factor authentication and the demand for cost-efficient solutions for military personnel to be able to collect biometric data in the field. [end]
