TruTouch Technologies has developed a finger-scanning alcohol detection unit that could be used to lock car ignitions of those who have been found guilty of driving under the influence, according to an Auto 1 2 3 article.
The device, which relies on infrared light scanning to determine alcohol levels in someone’s system, is being touted as a replacement for the breath-based breathalyzer system that driving while intoxicated offenders may have installed in their car as this system also identifies the user while scanning for blood-alcohol levels.
The breathalyzer’s in use mostly in first-time offender’s vehicles, however, TruTouch’s solution utilizes the same scanner for both determining the blood-alcohol level and biometrically determining the user’s identity to be sure that the person passing the test is the person that should be driving the car.
Road safety advocates such as the National Highway traffic Safety Administration and the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety have invested in the new technology in hopes of bringing a better product to market for ensuring intoxicated drivers are unable to drive.
