Indian Cabinet to decide on who will capture biometrics for UID

A Cabinet Committee working under India’s Home Minister will be deciding who will be responsible for the collection of biometric data from Indian citizens for the Unique Identification Number (UID) program that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was originally set to perform, according to an article from The Economic Times.

The Cabinet Committee has become involved as the Home Minister expressed concerns over UIDAI’s data collection processes, which he fears could lead to fraudulent profiles and non-regular residents having profiles created.

If the decision is made to not have UIDAI collect biometric data from the citizens, the responsibility will fall to the Registrar General of India.

Once the Cabinet Committee makes a decision, it is expected to be implemented straight away.
