Afghanistan and Pakistan agree on biometric border control

During a visit with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Afghan Interior Minister Zarar Ahmad Muqbal by A.Rehman Malik, advisor to the Pakistani prime minister on interior, an agreement was reached on deploying a biometric control system along the shared border, according to a People’s Daily Online article.

The system will be in place in order to control illegal border crossings in an effort to resolve some of the security concerns the two countries share. Both sides agreed to make this a joint effort by appointing key government personnel and technical teams to oversee the installation and implementation of the new control system.

Bush issues HSPD-24 on biometric screening

President Bush issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive 24 on June 5 dealing with biometrics for screening and identification.

“This directive establishes a framework to ensure that Federal executive departments and agencies (agencies) use mutually compatible methods and procedures in the collection, storage, use, analysis, and sharing of biometric and associated biographic and contextual information of individuals in a lawful and appropriate manner, while respecting their information privacy and other legal rights under United States law.”

Intercede launches MyID 8 Identity and Credential Management System

Intercede Group has launched MyID 8, an Identity and Credential Management System. Features of the system include: support for capturing facial biometrics, fingerprints, document scanning; built-in identity verification with identity background checking and biometric verification services; and simplified physical and logical access control.

Intercede’s MyID manages the devices and credentials used for photo ID badges, physical access to buildings and logical access to PC’s. Available now, MyID is listed on the U.S. GSA Approved Product List (APL) for FIPS 201 certified products. [end]

bioMETRX’ MasterLock smartTOUCH garage door opener was named best in class and the most reliable biometric garage door opener after testing in an independent lab. The testing was conducted by Good Housekeeping’s Research Institute. “bioMETRX was aware that Good Housekeeping was performing tests on our GDO product, but we didn’t expect the tests to include competitor products as well,” noted Mark Basile, Chief Executive Officer for bioMETRX. 

i-Fashion chooses Animetrics for virtual shopping

Identity Loop (www.identityloop.com) reports that i-Fashion Technology Center has chosen Animetrics GotFACE 2Dto3D technology for iFashion’s virtual shopping service. Animetrics GotFACE creates realistic 3D models of faces after a consumer either scans in or uploads a photograph or has one taken at an i-Fashion booth located at a retail store. iFashion then displays a 3D virtual image of shoppers’ body and face to see how clothing fits and looks on their virtual avatar.

The intent is that i-Fashion’s service will allow online and brick and mortar retailers to increase sales, lower product returns and speed up the selling process. The i-Fashion Technology Center is located at Konkuk University, Seoul Korea. [end] 

Sagem Morpho wins Biometric Identification Technology Award

Tacoma, Wash.-based Sagem Morpho received the “Best Biometric Identification Technology” award for its MorphoFace Investigate (MFI) system. Sagem’s MFI is a facial recognition application including case evidence management, biometric matching and forensic evaluation tools for investigative and crime solving tasks.

“MorphoFace Investigate received the Best Biometric Technology award for its ability to work with degraded images, even those containing obscured or partial faces and still find a match – it’s exactly the type of evidence law enforcement and intelligence personnel regularly retrieve,” said Walter Hamilton, an Expo Judge and Chairman of the International Biometric Industry Association. [end]
