Fingerprints gaining popularity in some Minnesota schools

Some Minnesota school districts are getting on the biometrics bandwagon, enabling students to use their fingerprints to get a meal in the cafeteria or to check out a book from the library. At one school, according to the article in the Pioneer Press, the fingerprints, which are stored as a numeric template, can also be used to identify students when they get their medication in the nurse’s office or go to a school dance. Fujitsu Computer Products will demonstrate its new PalmSecure™ PC Log-In Kit at the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Conference, Feb. 24-28 in Orlando, FL. The PC Log-In Kit is composed of the PalmSecure authentication sensor embedded into a PC mouse which captures an image of the user’s palm vein, and OmniPass™ Windows Log-in and Single Sign-On software which eliminates password entry for Windows sessions and password protected applications. PalmSecure generates a unique biometric template that is matched against pre-registered users’ palm vein patterns.

New report examines future of smart cards integrated with biometrics

The integration of smart cards with biometrics will become a growing market, according to new analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.smartcards.frost.com).

The report was cosponsored by APAC Integrated Smart Cards and Biometrics Markets. It found that the market for intgerated smart cards and biometric products earned $249.1 million in 2007 and is expected to reach $822.2 million by 2013. National ID projects are the most active revenue generators for the market, since all governments in the Asia Pacific are looking at implementing biometrics along with smart cards.

International visitors at Detroit airport to give 10 fingerprints

Detroit Metropolitan Airport becomes latest airport to require ten fingerprints instead of just two from its international visitors for the Department of Homeland Security. The department said the change in its US-VISIT program is meant to help it do a better job of stopping potential security risks.
